ABOUT CATARINA PUBLISHING

Books · Editions · Printed Matter

Catarina Publishing is an independent publishing practice dedicated to books, editions and printed matter across art, design, photography, interiors, food, travel and culture.

The practice approaches publishing as a meeting point between content and form. Words, images, typography, sequence, format, paper and materiality are considered together, allowing each publication to develop an identity appropriate to what it contains.

A book is not regarded simply as a container for information, but as an object in itself: something conceived, edited, designed, made and experienced.

Publishing

Catarina Publishing develops and publishes individual titles, collections and editions across a range of subjects and creative disciplines.

Its publishing programme encompasses photography, art and design, interiors and material culture, food and recipes, travel and place, visual studies and other subjects that reflect the wider interests of the publishing house.

Some publications originate directly within Catarina Publishing as editorial projects or collections. Others bring independently authored creative work into published form.

This allows Catarina Publishing to operate both as an originator of publications and as a publishing home for selected work.

Regardless of origin, each publication is approached according to the character of its content rather than through a predetermined formula.

The Book as an Object

The physical qualities of a publication form part of how its content is experienced.

Format determines how a book is held and encountered. Typography establishes hierarchy and rhythm. Paper influences the character of an image or page. Sequence determines the relationship between one moment and the next.

These decisions are not considered separately from the content, but as integral parts of the publication itself.

Catarina Publishing therefore approaches the book through the relationship between:

CONTENT · FORM · MATERIALITY

The objective is not decoration, but coherence: finding the form through which the content can be experienced most appropriately.

The book as an object.

Editions

The idea of the edition introduces deliberateness and permanence.

A publication brings material together at a particular moment and gives it a defined form through editing, structure, sequence, design and production.

For visual publications, individual images can acquire new relationships through juxtaposition, repetition, scale, rhythm and progression. For text-led publications, editing, typography and structure transform individual pieces of content into a coherent whole.

In both cases, the edition creates a distinct and enduring expression of the work.

Catarina Publishing approaches each edition with this relationship between content, form and permanence in mind.

Collections

Alongside individual titles, Catarina Publishing develops editorial collections that bring related publications together by subject, theme or editorial approach.

A collection provides a shared context while allowing each individual book to retain its own identity.

The catalogue may therefore be explored in two complementary ways:

  • Books presents individual publications across the complete Catarina Publishing catalogue.

  • Collections brings those publications together into related editorial categories, providing another way to discover and explore the catalogue.

A publication retains a single identity and publication record regardless of the collection in which it appears.

This structure allows the Catarina Publishing catalogue to grow while remaining coherent, accessible and easy to explore.

Authorship & Publishing

Catarina Publishing recognises a clear distinction between the authorship of a work and its publication.

Writers, photographers, artists, designers and other contributors retain attribution for their respective work, while Catarina Publishing provides the editorial and publishing framework through which that work becomes a publication.

Each title therefore identifies its contributors according to their actual role, preserving clarity between creative authorship, editorial development, design and publication.

This allows Catarina Publishing to publish work from different creative sources while maintaining a consistent publishing identity across its catalogue.

Approach

Catarina Publishing's approach can be understood as a progression:

EDIT → ORGANISE → DESIGN → PRODUCE → PUBLISH

  • Edit — establish the content and purpose of the publication.

  • Organise — develop structure, sequence and relationships between its elements.

  • Design — determine the visual and physical language through which the content is experienced.

  • Produce — translate the publication into a resolved printed or material object.

  • Publish — bring the completed edition into the wider catalogue.

Across these stages, the objective remains the same: to create publications in which content and form belong naturally together.
