ABOUT TOME

Research · Design · Development

Tome is an engineering research, design and development practice concerned with understanding technical problems and transforming knowledge into considered, technically resolved solutions.

Working across research, analysis, engineering design and development, Tome approaches technical questions through investigation: examining how something works, understanding the principles and constraints that define it, and using that knowledge to develop appropriate solutions.

At its centre is a relationship between knowledge, method and making.

Tome

The name Tome reflects two complementary ideas.

In its familiar sense, a tome represents a substantial body of knowledge—something studied, recorded and returned to as a source of understanding.

Engineering similarly depends upon accumulated knowledge expressed through scientific principles, calculations, drawings, specifications, standards, materials, methods and experience.

At an older linguistic level, the word relates to the idea of cutting or sectioning.

A section reveals what cannot necessarily be understood from the surface. It exposes internal relationships, construction and the way individual components come together to form a complete system.

Together, these two ideas provide a conceptual foundation for Tome:

The section that reveals how something is made.

The body of knowledge from which something can be made.

Approach

Tome's approach can be expressed as:

SECTION → UNDERSTAND → DEFINE → MAKE

  • Section — examine the problem, system or subject by looking beyond its surface and identifying its constituent parts and relationships.

  • Understand — develop knowledge through research, analysis, calculation, investigation and experimentation.

  • Define — translate that understanding into requirements, concepts, designs, specifications and technically considered decisions.

  • Make — develop the defined solution towards a form that can be created, tested, validated or implemented.

The process is not necessarily linear. Investigation may reveal new questions, testing may require further analysis, and development may lead back to design.

What remains constant is the relationship between understanding a problem and developing an appropriate technical response.

Research

Research is fundamental to Tome.

It provides the knowledge from which technical understanding and development can emerge, whether through the investigation of existing technologies, scientific principles, materials, systems, methods or new possibilities.

Research may support a particular engineering project or exist as an intellectual activity in its own right.

Alongside technical work, Tome develops and communicates knowledge through articles, studies, technical notes, papers and other forms of engineering research and writing.

This allows knowledge not only to support the development of solutions, but to become part of a wider and continuing technical record.

Design

Design translates understanding into definition.

Engineering design considers how requirements, constraints, performance, materials, components, interfaces and other technical considerations can be brought together within a coherent solution.

The objective is not simply to generate an idea, but to develop one with sufficient technical reasoning to explain what should be created, how it should work and why particular decisions have been made.

Design therefore provides the connection between knowledge and realisation.

Development

Development takes a defined idea further.

Through prototyping, experimentation, testing, optimisation and iteration, technical concepts can be examined against their intended requirements and refined as greater understanding emerges.

Development may reveal limitations, identify opportunities for improvement or generate new questions that require further research and analysis.

In this way, research, design and development remain interconnected rather than isolated stages.

Engineering & Technical Work

Tome's work may encompass:

  • Engineering & Technical Design — developing technically considered concepts, systems and solutions.

  • Research & Development — investigating questions, technologies and opportunities and progressing knowledge towards practical application.

  • Engineering Analysis — using technical reasoning, calculation and investigation to understand behaviour, performance and constraints.

  • Product & System Development — progressing concepts through definition, prototyping, testing and refinement.

  • Technology Investigation — examining existing and emerging technologies, their principles, capabilities and potential applications.

  • Technical Innovation — exploring new approaches to technical problems and opportunities.

  • Prototyping & Experimentation — creating and evaluating representations of concepts to develop understanding and test ideas.

  • Testing & Optimisation — assessing performance and refining technical solutions.

  • Technical Documentation — recording and communicating engineering knowledge, reasoning, specifications and outcomes.

Knowledge, Method & Making

Tome is ultimately concerned with the relationship between understanding and creation.

Knowledge provides the foundation.

Method provides the discipline through which that knowledge can be investigated and applied.

Making transforms understanding into something defined, tested or realised.

This relationship can be expressed as:

TOME → KNOWLEDGE → METHOD → MAKING

Knowledge from which things can be made.
