PUBLICATIONS
Research · Knowledge · Technical Communication
Technical publication forms an important part of Tome's relationship with research.
Research does not end when a technical question has been investigated. The knowledge developed through analysis, experimentation and engineering can also be documented, communicated and made available for further study.
The publications presented here reflect technical work by Claudia González Burguete across engineering, photonics, infrared detection, digital television and telecommunications.
Some publications form part of a continuing research programme and describe different stages of the same underlying technical development. Others represent earlier areas of technical investigation and writing.
Together, they create a record of how technical knowledge has been investigated, developed and communicated over time.
Infrared Detectors & Photonics
The principal research programme presented here explores the development of InAs/GaSb type-II superlattice infrared photodetectors monolithically integrated on silicon.
Developed between 2017 and 2021, the work progresses from investigating whether specialised infrared detector materials can be grown directly on silicon, through detector architecture and optimisation, towards the demonstration and characterisation of functional silicon-based mid-wave infrared photodetectors.
The research can be understood as a progression:
MATERIAL INTEGRATION → DETECTOR OPTIMISATION → DEVICE DEMONSTRATION → INFRARED IMAGING INTEGRATION

Development of Type II Superlattice Infrared Detectors Monolithically Integrated on Silicon Substrates
-
Written by — Claudia González Burguete
The thesis brings together the wider research programme investigating the development and integration of InAs/GaSb type-II superlattice infrared photodetectors directly on silicon.
The research examines the challenges created by combining different semiconductor materials, develops and characterises the superlattice structures, investigates alternative detector architectures and progresses towards functional mid-wave infrared photodetectors fabricated on silicon.
At its centre is a technical question:
-
Can the specialised semiconductor detector required for an infrared camera be manufactured directly on the same type of silicon platform used by conventional electronics?
The research demonstrates the technical feasibility of this approach while identifying material quality, defects, dark current and detector optimisation as continuing engineering challenges.

Digital Television & Telecommunications
An earlier body of technical writing, published in 2002, explores the development of digital television and telecommunications technologies.
Published in Spanish, these articles examine cable television systems and competing digital broadcasting standards during a period of significant technological transition.
They represent an earlier stage in Claudia González Burguete's technical writing and engineering interests, preceding the later research in photonics and infrared detector technology.

A Continuing Technical Record
The publications presented here span different periods, technologies and forms of technical communication.
The 2002 articles document an early interest in telecommunications and digital broadcasting.
The later work develops into a sustained research programme in photonics, semiconductor materials and infrared detection, progressing from material integration and detector architecture to functional silicon-based photodetectors.
Articles, conference papers, posters and the thesis should not necessarily be understood as separate research projects. Several document different stages or presentations of the same developing body of research.
Together, they demonstrate the role of publication within Tome:
INVESTIGATE → DEVELOP → DOCUMENT → COMMUNICATE
-
Research develops knowledge.
-
Publication gives that knowledge a technical record.
-
Knowledge from which things can be made
